I loved the first Dune movie that Dennis Villeneuve created so I was excited to see how he would expand on his vision in the sequel. There is much to admire in this movie, but to be honest there were aspects that bothered me. First and foremost I didn't believe the love story. We didn't see the characters of Paul and Chani evolve and bond in a convincing way. In the first film they focused on this feature as the sort of glue or focus of the movie and hinted on more to come. They really did not devote enough energy regarding the script and scenes to deliver on that. Secondly, as great an actor as Austin Butler is, I didn't think the aesthetic choices for his role served that character. The bald head and black and white chromatic tones may denote a certain harshness, however to me it looked almost slightly comical which took away the sense of threat. Thirdly, there might have been too much "story" to cover which led to glossing over important character arcs. Seeing how characters make certain choices and change over time and through experience is an important aspect of creating the development of the story. Since Paul is the central figure of the movie some attention was given to him in this regard but virtually every other character is not given space to change in convincing ways, including Jessica Atreides Paul's mother and Chani. There are some truly great cinematic shots and the world building is something to be admired. I just wish directors would keep in mind these stories only work when the focus is on characters.
I must say that Animal Farm, written by George Orwell, is my most favorite novel featuring animals. This entire novel is an allegory for the political ideology, Communism. "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others." is one of my favorite lines from the book, The animals…
