Why Read?

In today's world there are more distractions and options than ever before for how to spend our time.  Why is reading so important?

Reading is essential to a practical understanding of almost any subject. If you have good reading comprehension skills you can learn just about anything!  Even hands-on learning benefits from instruction manuals. If you want to be successful in any area from soccer to singing to science; books are for you. Imagine not knowing how to read a danger sign?  Imagine trying to buy your first car and not understanding how to read the contract you have to sign?  Reading is all around us in everyday matters.

Reading is more than just fundamental to learning.  It is also FUN!  Story telling is an ancient art form and even modern day tv shows and movies start off with scripts.  Many movies are based off books and are what is called "screen adaptations".  When we read engaging stories we are riveted by characters and plots we may not have encountered before. Have you ever read a book you couldn't put down because you had to find out what happens next?

Reading  helps us to understand different events and circumstances. We develop a greater awareness and understanding of the world. We discover new realities and find out more about ourselves in the process. Reading opens doors in our mind and allows for development of empathy.  We learn about situations and characters we may have never encountered before which in turn help us to evolve.  We learn more about the world and ourselves at the same time.

There are even more benefits to reading than those mentioned above.  The health benefits of reading include strengthening the brain and reducing stress.  There is also evidence reading helps develop communication skills and can aid in relieving depression. Try to read books that inspire and stimulate you besides what you may have to read for school.  Reading for enjoyment is a wonderful gift you can give yourself and these positive effects are right at your fingertips!
